Cherokee land rush

“The Cherokee Reserve, in the Indian territory of the US, was thrown open to selection … Prior to the land being declared open for selection many hundreds of intending selectors had assembled on the outskirts of the reserve, and it was estimated that when the land was thrown open there were 100,000 persons on the scene. A great rush took place for the land, and in the struggle eight persons lost their lives.”

Letter to the Editor

“Another death has been caused through the reckless handling of firearms – on this occasion in the crowded business premises of Messrs Anthony Hordern and Sons,” wrote Excelsior. “Who is to blame? Practically the inquest has said: ‘Nobody,’ and the young man who caused the death has been discharged ... [It is] high time to pass a law that will make it a punishable offence to carry firearms.”
