Nevada fishing report, Feb. 7, 2018

LAKE MEAD — All warm water species are biting. Water temperatures are around 60 degrees and that has triggered the bite. Crappie and black bass are taking baits in the Overton Arm. Silver colored crankbaits are fooling the fish. Crappies also will take small jigs. They are hiding in the brush along the shelves. Government Wash has been good for threadfin and gizzard shad. Catfish have been active and biting on anchovies.

LAKE MOHAVE — Catfish are active and biting. Willow Beach has been slow but fish in the 3- to 6-pound class are taking anchovies. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are biting in the back of coves. They are hitting on crawdads and plastic worms. Colors vary with the water clarity.

LAUGHLIN — Largemouth bass and stripers are pursuing stocked rainbow trout below Davis Dam. One lucky angler caught a 10-pound striper while fishing anchovies from the shoreline. The southern end of Big Bend State Recreation Area has been good for stripers and catfish. Fishing on the bottom has been productive from boats as well as the shoreline. Trout are hitting night crawlers, and yellow and red variations of PowerBait.

LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS — The Nevada Department of Wildlife plans to stock rainbow trout sometime this week at Floyd Lamb, Sunset and Lorenzi Park ponds. Anglers have been catching the fish with Power Eggs and salmon eggs in orange and yellow colorations.

KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — The reservoirs are mostly ice free with only a few thin icy patches, but with temperatures in the 50’s and 60’s it a perfect time to hit the water and catch rainbow trout that have been fattening up over the winter months.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — Most of the lake has opened up, but some thin ice remains around the edges. The area in front of the fishing dock is open water, and anglers have been catching rainbow trout using a variety of PowerBait colorations, as well as small spinning lures. The campground is open.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — The reservoir is open water with only a little thin ice around the shoreline in the early morning hours. Rainbows are taking PowerBait and night crawlers.

UPCOMING FISHING EVENTS — NDOW is offering free fly-tying classes the third Tuesday of the month from 6–7:30 p.m. at the agency’s Las Vegas office. The next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 20.
