Fishermen of all ages cast out their lines on “Free Fishing Day” in Nebraska
PONCA, Neb. (KTIV) - It’s free fishing weekend in Nebraska and South Dakota, a time of the year when anglers can go out and fish without a license.
On Saturday, May 17, at Ponca State Park, people could come and fish for free. Families casted out their lines in hopes of catching a rainbow trout, a largemouth bass, or a blue gill.
“Free Fishing Day” offers a great opportunity to introduce new anglers to the sport. And with a bit of luck, they just might get hooked.
“This was my first time catching a fish. Yeah, really. I’m really happy that I catched the fish today. I hope I catch another one,” said Clover McLaughlin, an 8-year-old angler.
The event encourages families to spend some time outdoors, enjoy the day, and spend some time together.
“It gets you out of the house, gets you something to do away from the electronics and stuff like that. And you can talk and bond,” said Kyle Black, A dad at the park.
One young fisherman says that he enjoys sharing his hobby with his family.
“I just find it fun fishing and catching a lot of fish and stuff. It’s pretty fun coming out and traveling to these places to go fishing,” said Adrian Zarate, a 10-year-old angler.
For Iowans who are hoping to get in on the fun, Free Fishing Weekend is coming up in the Hawkeye State, from Friday, June 6 until Sunday, June 8.
