LAGRANGE – It was quite a battle on Saturday between Elkhart and Westview’s boys golf teams at the Lakeland Invitational at Heron Creek Golf Course.
When all was said and done, it was the Lions prevailing and taking home the team title, carding a 310 to the Warriors’ 312.
But it was Warrior senior Silas Haarer winning medalist honors with a 70 (35-35) on a day that started out chilly and brisk with temperatures in the upper 40s.
Silas Haarer said consistent ball striking was the key to his big day.
“It was a little chilly on the front nine,” Haarer said. “My putting was good. When it’s this close, every stroke matters.”
Westview coach Jeff Marchant was more than pleased with his squad’s efforts on Saturday.
Especially when you consider that it was the Warriors’ best 18-hole score in school history.
“As long as we’re staying consistent, with what we’re doing right now, that’s what we want to do,” Marchant said. “We want to keep improving.”
Luke Haarer, Silas’s younger brother and the Warriors’ No. 2, turned in a 75, good for fourth. Brett Springer shot an 85, good for ninth, Liam Brill had 85 and Caedmon Gates a 96 to round out the Westview scorecard.
Garrett’s Carter Demske was second individually with a 71, leading the Railroaders to a third-place finish with 332. Braeden Morr shot an 82 to lead Prairie Heights, who was 10th with 401.
Elkhart head coach Todd King said his team played steady golf and stayed in the present.
“That’s been our mantra all year,” King said. “Don’t dwell on bad shots… stay positive, and good things will happen. The more you tell the kids that, the more they believe it.”
Otherwise among area teams, Angola was third (348), led by Johnny Hersel’s 84, Lakeland eighth (381), West Noble ninth (398) and Eastside 11th (413).
Sam Keil led the Lakers with 88. Brady Ferguson and Carson Yoder had 97s.
Isaac Mast shot 86 and Nolan Kelly had 97 for the Chargers.
Braxtyn Chamberlain had 93 and Carter Helbert had 99 for the Blazers.
