Jersey Shore Fishing: Jumbo porgies on offshore wrecks

Though the sea bass season is closed, there are still plenty of porgies on offshore wrecks. The Big Jamaica from Brielle finally got a break from the weather on Saturday and got offshore for catches of 40 jumbo porgies a man plus some ling. A 25-pound pollock ran away with the pool for Daryl Aston of Morristown, Pa. , and T. Flowers from Westchester, Pa. took second with a 3.5-pound porgy. Those trips depart at 2 a.m. on Saturdays. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations. There's also a Saturday 8 p.m. sailing on Jan. 27 and Feb. 10 for Block Island cod. Reservations are also required.

The Ocean Explorer from Belmar managed only three keeper blackfish and a dozen shorts plus some eels during Sunday's trip in beautiful weather. As noted here, the melting snow and ice from rivers drives the bottom water temperatures very low at this time. The great weather ends tonight with rain and breezy south winds.

Adam La Rosa only has 15 tickets left to Saturday's Canyon Runner Seminar in Atlantic City. Call him at 732 842-6825. That fleet will be sailing for giant tuna out of Oregon Inlet, N.C. after the seminar.

Vinny D'Anton of Wall celebrated his birthday Saturday in Sarasota, Fl. by catching small blues from shore on his Chug Bug. One was a 4 1/2-pounder which is large for Florida blues.
