Once a nurse by profession, 42-year-old Mereia Raikuru Rasiga has decided to enter politics because she believes it links to everyday life.

Ms Rasiga is a Unity Fiji party provisional candidate for next month’s general election.

Born and bred in Ra Province, she acknowledged her late uncle and aunt who were determined to put her through school, and later nursing school, despite the many challenges they faced.

A mother of two children, Ms Rasiga was inspired to stand for election after she returned to Lawaki Settlement where she spent most of her childhood.

Her decision to enter politics came naturally.

She’s an active community worker not only in Lawaki Settlement, but for other organisations as well.

Ms Rasiga is a facilitator at the USP-Lautoka Branch-Care giving Course and Nurse Co-ordinator for FRIEND Fiji.

She believes the key to the coming election is that good leadership results in good decision making.

“I believe politics is linked to our everyday lives. Decisions made by our political leaders affect everything that we do,” Ms Rasiga said.

“I believe good leadership is the most important thing in life. Every decision affects us in some way.

“The Government of the day has shown a good leadership over the years that they served and we have experienced great results of their service in terms of education.

“The Government addressed the importance of education and I think they contributed a lot to the wellbeing of young people in Fiji.

“I believe good education produces a lot of job opportunities and also reduces poverty level in our country.”

Ms Rasiga was educated at St Thomas Primary in Lautoka and furthered her secondary studies at Saint Thomas High School.

Her ambition to become a nurse came to fulfillment when she attended nursing school in 1995 and later graduated in 1999. She spent 19 years in the medical field.

Ms Rasiga lists her hobbies as meeting people, cooking, swimming and fishing.
