Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Anglers Association (SAA) will adopt a different format in next year's annual Sabah International Fishing Tournament (SIF T) from April 17 to 22 – there will be no more individual events but team ones. "The team which submits the heaviest total weight of three different species of fish wins the 1st prize of RM20,000 in cash and kind. The second heaviest total weight also of three different species of fish will be awarded the 2nd prize of RM10,000 while the team with the third heaviest total weight will win RM5,000," SAA President Datuk Wilfred Lingham, told a press conference, Friday.

He said each team must have a minimum of three and a maximum of five anglers, adding that SAA is reverting to the team event format as it wants to promote camaraderie and team spirit among anglers.

The tournament area remains at Pulau Layang Layang.

"This year, SAA is also reintroducing prizes for the heaviest fish from 10 species, namely Tuna, Trevally, Wahoo/Mackerels, Cobia/Amberjack, Barracuda, Jewfish/Grouper, Snapper, Ruby/Pale Snapper, Sea Perch and Billfish."

Since SAA had implemented the 'catch and release' for any Billfish, anglers need to submit photographic evidence for a chance to win the prize, Lingham said adding that the prize for the individual category is RM250 per winning fish species.

Another addition to the tournament rules is that Escolar will not be accepted as an entry submission in SIF T 2018 as it is not a "sport" fish.

"SAA has also included an early bird rate of RM450 per person for participants registering before January 1 2018.

The fee after January 1, 2018 will be RM550 per person for non SAA member and RM450 for SAA member, he said.

The closing date for registration is 6pm on March 10 2018. Participants will be flagged off from Sutera Marina on April 17 and be back at the same place on April 22 for the prize presentation.

"Last year, we saw more than 100 participants taking part in this annual international tournament aimed at promoting sport fishing in Sabah.

"So far we have confirmed participations from about 80 anglers from Sabah, Macau, Hong Kong, Brunei Darussalam and China.

"We expect to receive more participants as the tournament date draws nearer," said Lingham. - Neil Chan
